By shifting to energy efficient production lines, Egypt Cables increased production output and enhanced its competitive position in the market

Egypt Cables Company (ECM), established in 2003, is a joint-stock company specializing in the production of high, medium, and low voltage cables and electric conductors. With a workforce exceeding 400 employees, ECM has positioned itself as a key player in the cable manufacturing industry.

In a move to upgrade its Beni Sueif production facility. ECM invested in replacing their inefficient machinery within its medium and high voltage cable production lines, alongside upgrading an aging drum twister with a modern energy-efficient options.

ECM recognized the importance of enhancing its competitive edge in the energy-intensive industry of cable production and embarked on this project to improve their energy performance in pursuit of cutting operational costs, and to heighten their production capacity as well as quality.

The project was aligned with the objectives of the GEFF Egypt program and met all relevant requirements, which made ECM eligible for GEFF financing and financial incentives.

The US$ 4,030,949 invested in this project led to reducing ECM’s overall primary energy consumption by 23%, equivalent to 13,239 MWh per year. Such a reduction is directly reflected in ECM’s profitability. Moreover, the enhanced quality of the final product and the increased production output further supports the company’s competitive edge in the market.

The project benefits don’t stop at the commercial side, but the environmental gain was equally impressive, with the mitigation of 2,307 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, a target for ECM to contribute to combating the threat of climate change. Furthermore, the project created 48 new job opportunities for engineers and technicians, contributing to local employment.

GEFF Egypt was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the European Union Neighbourhood Investment Facility.
