On February 20, Armenia’s government gave the green light to financial agreements with the European Union totalling €65 million. The funds will go towards three programmes to boost energy efficiency, protect the environment, foster community development, and create tools for the implementation of the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement.
The executive has endorsed the proposal to sign the “Financing Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the European Commission for Energy Efficiency and the Environment”, which will support energy efficiency and environmental initiatives in Armenia. In particular, these measures are envisaged to increase energy efficiency in existing buildings (e.g. multi-residential and low-income households) and provide related technical support for achieving the required energy efficiency standards.
Referring to the issue of energy saving, head of the government Nikol Pashinyan emphasised: “Today, the citizens of the Republic of Armenia spend considerable sums on heating and cooling our homes and workplaces. But this amount can be considerably reduced if we make serious investments in energy efficiency. To give just a small example, if we now spend AMD 1,000 on heating a home, we could cut those costs to AMD 700 if we invest in heat-saving measures, and potential energy price hikes would not have a significant impact on our household budget. In this regard, I think that the topic of energy efficiency, especially for us, should have strategic priority. We must set the task that every citizen of the Republic of Armenia should strive to become as energy efficient as possible. This is an economic issue, but also a matter of energy security and energy independence …”
