Although women make up close to half of the world’s population they are often disproportionately impacted by climate change – their voices are often not heard, due to their limited inclusion in policy formulation and their low representation at the decision-making level.
Now more than ever, enhancing women’s participation and leadership in discussions on climate action is critical for securing a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future for us all. In Armenia, women are actively engaged in creating a sustainable future and it is crucial that their input is acknowledged, encouraged and properly presented to the public.
Taking this into account, the event “Women for climate and energy in Armenia” was hosted by the NGO Women in Climate and Energy with the support of the UNDP within the framework of the UNDP-GEF project “Development of Armenia’s Fourth National Communication to the UNFCCC and Second Biennial Update Report”.
The objective of the event was to bring together women and girls actively involved in the field of climate and energy and who contribute positively towards the sustainable development of Armenia. The participants were representatives of the legislators as well as women and girls from the public and private sector, various social groups and youth. Attendees were given the opportunity to take part in the effective exchange of experiences through inspirational talks for women and girls about empowerment and the role of women in the climate and energy sector as well as about the achievements of female professionals in this field.
Through a series of panel discussions and networking sessions, the more than 50 participants developed a shared understanding of the current situation as well as the experiences and challenges faced.
The GEFF in Armenia was represented by the local project implementation team during the discussions on the role of women in environmental impact, awareness-raising and the promotion of required actions.
