In 2017, Armenia ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change and committed to limiting its greenhouse gas emissions, and thereby contribute to the international efforts for climate change mitigation. The European Union (EU) is working with Armenia to tackle climate change and provide a better quality of life for Armenian citizens by developing improved environmental policies and greener investments to modernise the social and technical infrastructure of cities and reach the goals set.
The EU4Climate project implemented within the framework of the Eastern Partnership also supports the harmonisation of local and European policies on climate change. In this regard, Armenia’s efforts to reach a greener and more sustainable economy align with the approaches outlined in the “European Green Deal” to achieve greenhouse gas emissions neutrality by 2050. Furthermore, because the majority of greenhouse gas emissions in Armenia come from the energy sector, the maximal use of renewable energy potential is essential to achieving environmental benefits and ensuring energy security.
In recent years, solar energy, particularly the construction and use of solar photovoltaic plants, has become prevalent. By 2030, the government of the Republic of Armenia has set a goal to increase the share of solar energy in total energy production by up to 15 per cent or 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours. In this regard, the Republic of Armenia has set a target of building solar power plants with a total capacity of up to 1,000 megawatts. Furthermore, the EU supports various projects that enable an increasing number of buildings to use systems based on renewable energy resources. As of January 2021, 4,144 autonomous solar power plants with up to 500 kilowatts and 76.8 megawatts of total installed capacity had already connected to the network.
International donor organisations have undertaken many initiatives to support Armenia’s transition to the green economy and support double its share of renewables in energy generation on the path to achieving climate neutrality by 2030.
