Two energy-efficiency projects financed by the EBRD’s GEFF in Armenia have been nominated for National Energy Globe Awards:
– Kataro LLC with its energy-efficient wine processing and bottling equipment
– Tamara Fruit CJSC with its energy- and water-saving cooling facilities
The Energy Globe Awards were introduced by the Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Neumann in 1999. Since 2000, the Award’s database has grown and now contains approximately 20,000 emissions-reducing projects from around 180 countries, all of which serve one aim: presenting innovative and sustainable projects to a broader global audience. The importance of these projects is highlighted by the Energy Globe Awards and leads to a multiplier effect, as there are multiple solutions to most environmental problems available on the market today, which bear potential for replication in other countries and regions.
Approximately 800 projects and initiatives are submitted annually to compete for the National Energy Globe Awards. The winners on the national level are then nominated for the International Energy Globe Award or the Energy Globe World Award. The international category winners are announced during a ceremony that is broadcast worldwide and covered by international media. Participation is open to projects focusing on resource conservation, air and water quality, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and projects that create awareness in these areas. The competition is open to individuals, private or public institutions, companies and NGOs and there is no entry fee.
In the meantime, GEFF in Armenia continues financing energy efficiency and renewable energy projects through its partner financial institutions in the corporate and SME sectors. As of December 2021, 303 projects totalling EUR 25 million had been financed, resulting in a reduction in primary energy use by 117,000 MWh/year and saving 27,500 tonnes of CO2 and 5,250 tonnes of water annually.
