Egypt’s Energy Transition Finance: GEFF Egypt contributes to policy dialogue
On November 12, GEFF Egypt Team Leader participated in a policy dialogue session titled “Energy Transition Finance in Egypt.” This event, the third in a series organized by the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region & Europe (CEDARE) and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), took place at the City Stars Intercontinental hotel in Cairo.
The session hosted over 40 participants, including bank representatives (NBE, Banque Misr, Alex Bank, CIB and African Development Bank), public representatives, including the Chairman of the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), an Ambassador from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs handling EU cooperation, and a senior representative from the Al-Ahram Center for Political & Strategic Studies.
Throughout the session, participants engaged in a comprehensive review of various aspects of the energy transition landscape. The discussion then shifted towards exploring challenges faced by the financial industry, encompassing commercial banks, development institutions, and other relevant stakeholders. A key point emphasized the need to strengthen the banking sector’s capabilities and raise awareness among customers about available technologies.
During the discussion, the four current GEFF participating financial institutions – NBE, Banque Misr, Alex Bank, and CIB – shared positive experiences, acknowledging GEFF’s role in motivating their project portfolios. The session served as a platform for in-depth dialogue, promoting collaboration and understanding among key players in Egypt’s energy transition finance sector.
