New drum twister machine ensures that BICC remains competitive, while aligning with global sustainability standards.

BICC Cables is a privately-owned manufacturer of power cables and electrical wires, founded in 1997. Operating from Abu Rawash in Giza Governorate, the company supplies both local and international markets.

Over the years, BICC has built a reputation for quality and reliability but faced challenges from increasing energy costs and outdated machinery. To strengthen its competitiveness, BICC Cables invested in a new energy-efficient drum twister machine (DT3600), replacing its older DT2000 model. This strategic upgrade was financed with the support of GEFF Egypt through a US$645,771 loan, covering 66% of the total investment.

The old drum twister consumed excessive energy and limited production capacity, resulting in higher costs per tonne produced. By adopting the DT3600, BICC Cables aimed to reduce energy consumption per unit of production while expanding production capacity to meet growing demand.

This investment ensures that BICC remains competitive in both domestic and export markets, while aligning with global sustainability standards.

The new drum twister delivers measurable improvements:

  • Energy savings: 368 MWh annually, equivalent to 4,417 GJ.
  • Environmental impact: 214 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided each year.
  • Productivity: Annual output increased by nearly 90%, from 4,500 to 8,460 tonnes.
  • Financial performance: A payback period of 2.5 years.

The project was made possible through GEFF Egypt’s technical expertise and financial support. GEFF not only provided financing but also offered advisory services, helping BICC Cables identify the most efficient technology and verify its eligibility under the program. The project qualified for a 10% investment incentive due to exceeding the minimum energy saving threshold.

The Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF), was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is financially supported by the EU, EIB and AFD.
