In Georgia, supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is vital for economic development, as these make up 99% of all active businesses in the country and thus play a pivotal role in the creation employment and fiscal stability. Georgia’s 2021-2025 SME Development Strategy fosters an environment conducive to growth and prosperity. One key aspect of this strategy is advancing the green economy for SMEs.
In recent years, Georgia has embarked on a journey towards incorporating environmentally friendly practices into its entrepreneurial landscape, aiming to bolster green development and integrate environmental standards into its economy.
Despite progress made, Georgia acknowledges the absence of a high-level strategic vision for green growth. Challenges persist, notably with regard to access to financing for SMEs seeking to embrace environmentally sustainable practices. While international financial institutions have injected US$ 400 million, primarily directed towards large-scale renewable energy projects, SMEs face barriers owing to limited access to these resources, thus hindering their ability to invest in green technologies. Additionally, SMEs, which predominantly operate in lower value-added sectors, are faced with hurdles in contributing meaningfully to the green economy.
Moreover, awareness among SMEs regarding the benefits of embracing green practices remains low, compounded by limited knowledge regarding existing environmental legislation. Addressing these challenges necessitates concerted efforts from the state to provide tailored support, including financial incentives and educational programmes, to empower SMEs to transition towards sustainability.
By fostering an ecosystem conducive to green entrepreneurship and equipping SMEs with the necessary resources and knowledge, Georgia can pave the way to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious economic future.
