On February 4th, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) hosted the EBRD Green Growth in Jordan Summit to showcase the impact of the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) programme in Jordan. The summit commenced with opening remarks from His Excellency, the Minister of Environment, the Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation in Jordan, and the EBRD Head of the Eastern Mediterranean region.
To date, the EBRD, the Green Climate Fund (GCF), and the European Union (EU) have provided a total of USD 41 million in financing under the programme to partner financial institutions, the Housing Bank for Trade and Finance, Cairo Amman Bank, and Bank al Etihad, as well as two microfinance institutions, the MicroFund for Women and Tamweelcom. This funding has supported businesses and individuals in making sustainable investments. Launched in Jordan in 2022, the GEFF programme has facilitated the country’s transition to a greener economy, supporting more than 760 projects. Four of these projects received the GEFF Award 2024 in four different categories, alongside recognition for the top-performing relationship managers within partner institutions.
This year, the GEFF summit highlighted the critical role of green buildings in the future of green finance in Jordan. A dedicated session explored the opportunities and challenges within the sector, emphasizing the role of green finance in enhancing the sustainable construction. Additionally, a second session, featuring the Central Bank of Jordan and partner financial institutions, reflected on their GEFF journey and achievements over the past two years.
