Fleet modernisation for more efficient and sustainable refrigerated logistics.
As Morocco’s fresh produce exports continue to gain momentum across European markets, the ability to transport fruits and vegetables under optimal temperature-controlled conditions has become a key success factor for the sector. Reliable refrigerated logistics not only preserve product quality and freshness throughout the journey but also help Moroccan exporters meet increasingly demanding international standards.
For Saouir Transport, a Moroccan company specializing in national and international refrigerated road transport, maintaining competitiveness required continuous investment in modern and efficient transport solutions. Operating a fleet of 95 refrigerated semi-trailers and serving key export destinations such as France and Spain, the company plays an important role in connecting Moroccan agricultural producers with international markets.
However, part of the fleet consisted of ageing refrigerated units that generated higher fuel consumption, increased maintenance requirements and lower operational efficiency. Some older trailers were no longer suitable for international refrigerated transport and were mainly used for local non-refrigerated operations, limiting their economic value.
To address these challenges, Saouir Transport launched a fleet modernisation programme through the acquisition of six highly insulated SOR IBERICA refrigerated semi-trailers equipped with next-generation Thermo King refrigeration units featuring integrated telematics technology.
Supported by the GEFF II programme and financed through Maghrebail, the company invested approximately €395,000 in this advanced cold-chain transport solution.
The objective was clear: improve transport reliability, strengthen operational performance, reduce fuel consumption and support the sustainable growth of Morocco’s agri-food export sector.
The results demonstrate how modern refrigerated transport technologies can generate both economic and environmental value.
Thanks to improved thermal insulation and more efficient refrigeration systems, the new fleet reduces diesel consumption by approximately 3,835 litres per year, representing a 48% reduction compared to the equipment being replaced.
These improvements translate into annual savings of more than 148 GJ of primary energy while avoiding approximately 12.4 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year.
Beyond energy savings, the investment delivers significant operational benefits. The new equipment requires less maintenance, reduces downtime and increases productivity, enabling the company to provide a more reliable refrigerated transport service. Improved temperature control also contributes to reducing food losses throughout the supply chain, helping preserve the quality of fresh products during transport.
Most importantly, the project demonstrates how fleet modernisation can enhance the competitiveness of Moroccan logistics operators while supporting more sustainable and resilient food supply chains.
Today, Saouir Transport illustrates how investments in advanced refrigerated transport technologies can simultaneously improve operational performance, reduce environmental impact and strengthen Morocco’s capacity to deliver high-quality agricultural products to international markets.
Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Morocco is a green economy financing program, implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will provide financing to Moroccan private enterprises through local financial institution partners. Supported by the European Union (EU), the Green Climate Fund (GCF). It will enable local companies to invest in green technologies, reduce their costs through climate adaptation measures, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
