Fleet Modernisation for More Efficient and Sustainable Refrigerated Logistics

As Morocco’s agri-food exports continue to grow, transport companies face increasing pressure to deliver perishable goods quickly, reliably and under strict temperature-controlled conditions. Maintaining product quality throughout the journey is essential, particularly for exporters serving demanding European markets.

For Agasa Transport, a Moroccan company specializing in national and international refrigerated transport, staying competitive required continuous investment in its fleet. Operating more than 53 refrigerated transport units and serving key markets including France, Spain, Portugal and Italy, the company plays an important role in transporting fruits, vegetables and frozen products from Morocco to international consumers.

However, part of its refrigerated fleet had been in operation for more than ten years, resulting in higher fuel consumption, increased maintenance requirements and reduced operational efficiency.

To address these challenges, Agasa Transport decided to modernise its fleet through the acquisition two new well-insulated semi-trailers and two new refrigeration units.

Supported by the GEFF II programme and financed by Maroc Leasing, the company invested approximately €152,000 in this modern refrigeration transport solution.

The objective was clear: improve transport efficiency, reduce operating costs, enhance service reliability and lower environmental impact.

The results demonstrate how fleet modernisation can deliver both economic and environmental benefits.

Thanks to improved insulation performance and more efficient refrigeration technology, the new equipment reduces diesel consumption by approximately 1,203 litres per year, representing a 45% reduction compared to the equipment being replaced. This translates into annual savings of more than 46 GJ of primary energy and avoids approximately 3.9 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Beyond energy savings, the investment delivers significant operational improvements. The new semi-trailers require less maintenance, reduce downtime and improve productivity, while advanced refrigeration technology ensures more reliable temperature-controlled transport for sensitive food products.

Most importantly, the project illustrates how sustainable transport solutions can strengthen the competitiveness of Moroccan logistics companies while supporting the transition towards lower-carbon supply chains.

Today, Agasa Transport demonstrates how modern refrigerated transport technologies can help preserve product quality, improve operational performance and reduce environmental impact — ensuring that Moroccan agricultural products reach international markets more efficiently and sustainably.

Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Morocco is a green economy financing program, implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will provide financing to Moroccan private enterprises through local financial institution partners. Supported by the European Union (EU), the Green Climate Fund (GCF). It will enable local companies to invest in green technologies, reduce their costs through climate adaptation measures, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
