The new energy-efficient ophthalmological laser system strengthens service quality, patient capacity, and environmental performance.

Mongolia’s healthcare sector sees growing demand for advanced diagnostic and surgical services, particularly in ophthalmology, as urban populations expand and awareness of eye health increases. Established in 2006, Solongo Kharaa LLC, is a leading eye diagnostics and surgery clinic in Ulaanbaatar, offering preventive diagnostics, comprehensive eye examinations, LASIK surgery, and treatment for various ocular conditions.

The clinic’s old excimer gas laser system had become outdated, offering limited accuracy, long preparation and operation times, high electricity and nitrogen consumption, rising maintenance costs, and insufficient capacity to meet demands for treatment.

To improve service quality and efficiency, the company invested USD 129,000 in a modern, energy-efficient laser system, partly financed through a GEFF loan from Khan Bank. The new equipment reduces preparation and procedure times, increases precision, and enables the clinic to serve more patients.

As a result of the upgrade, annual energy consumption decreased by 8 MWh, CO₂ emissions decreased by 1.4 tonnes per year, and operating costs declined. The financial benefits generated by energy and maintenance cost reductions are complemented by additional revenues resulting from increased capacity and patient numbers.

The Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Mongolia was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the Green Climate Fund and the Government of Japan.
