Lower bills, stronger business: solar energy supports a local café

In the town of Busira, Tafileh, Amal Al-Masa’deen decided to open a small family coffee shop to support her household and bring neighbors together over a cup of coffee. The shop quickly became popular, but rising electricity bills — nearly JD 200 a month — put pressure on her income and threatened the stability of her business.

Looking for a lasting solution, Amal turned to the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) through Microfund for Women (MfW). With their support, she installed a rooftop solar energy system that now powers the shop’s equipment. The change was immediate: electricity bills dropped to almost zero, saving around 18 MWh of energy each year and avoiding nearly 4.8 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.

For Amal, the benefits went beyond cutting costs. With her expenses under control, she can keep prices affordable for her customers, even as energy prices climb nationwide. The shop is now more comfortable and reliable, giving her the confidence to plan ahead.

The total investment of US$ 5,642, supported by a 10% cashback incentive of US$ 564, has already paid off. Amal is now planning to add outdoor seating areas, creating a welcoming space for families to spend time together.

Her story highlights how renewable energy can empower women-led businesses, sustain livelihoods, and create new opportunities in Jordan’s communities.

The Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Jordan is developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the European Union (EU) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
