TurSEFF financing supports a biogas project in Şanlıurfa that turns agricultural waste into renewable electricity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Babil Biyogaz Enerji Sistemleri Sanayi ve Ticaret Ltd. Şti. operates a 4.68 MW biogas power plant in the Şanlıurfa Agricultural Specialized Organized Industrial Zone. The plant utilizes cattle manure and organic waste, including whey, sourced from nearby farms in southeastern Türkiye.

The company aimed to expand its renewable energy capacity, improve regional waste management practices, and align with Türkiye’s energy transition targets.

To this end in 2021, the company, having partnered with TurSEFF, decided to undertake the investment through TurSEFF in order to benefit from the engineering, financial, and marketing services provided alongside the financing (technical assistance package).

The €2,400,000 TurSEFF finance support the installation of a 3.12 MWel capacity within the plant. The investment aims to enable the plant to generate additional renewable energy from biogas, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and improve environmental performance. The new system also expecped to contribute to circular economy practices by turning waste into energy.

The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6,096 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent annually, contributing to Türkiye’s climate goals and sustainable rural development.

Türkiye Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (TurSEFF) was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is co-funded by the European Union (EU), the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Treasury and Finance (MoTF), and supported by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR).
