The first blood plasma processing and storage center was established in Tashkent. The installation uses state of the art, efficient cooling technologies.
Haematech LLC is pharmaceutical company, established in 2022 following the regulation change that now allows private companies to collect and process blood in Uzbekistan. The company employs 100 staff and produces frozen blood plasma as well as complex drugs made from plasma, based on blood collected from donors. Plasma and its byproducts are commonly used for treating a wide range of conditions, including immune deficiencies, bleeding disorders, and rare diseases. They act as vital medications for patients whose bodies cannot produce these essential proteins or antibodies naturally. Plasma is also used to treat shock, boost blood volume, and aid in blood clotting for trauma and burn victims. In essence, blood plasma-derived medications are lifesaving and life-sustaining therapies for a diverse group of patients, addressing a wide spectrum of medical needs. This makes this first local producer pf blood plasma products critically important.
The plasma is most effective when it is frozen immediately after the donation and stored frozen at below -18C. Currently the company has freezers in the donation centre. However, it also rents a storage area for longer storage duration up to 6 months. The company therefore invested in a new storage area with superior energy efficiency performance to reduce costs. Using a GEFF loan from Ipoteka Bank, the company built a new storage building using highly insulating sandwich panels, high performance and efficient cooling systems, freezers, heat recovery systems and LED lighting for the cooling chambers. Especially the cooling systems, freezers and temperature monitoring systems comply with EU norms as the storage of plasma is highly sensitive. Therefore, the new storage consists of state-of-the-art temperature monitoring and conditioning systems.
The Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Uzbekistan was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the Canada through the EBRD’s High- Impact Partnership on Climate Action – HIPCA, the Climate Investment Fund and the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Project Donors).
