The new drip irrigation system helps reduce water consumption and increase crop yields

The entrepreneur from the South Kazakhstan region has been cultivating tomatoes for several years. Last year, the region experienced a severe drought with minimal rainfall. The crop yield was lower than planned. The entrepreneur realized the need of the irrigation system modernisation with high-quality equipment as a long-term investment. He was already aware of the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) from the EBRD, which supports business modernization through energy-efficient and resource-efficient technologies. The entrepreneur approached a Program consultant who offered a financial solution for purchasing a new drip irrigation system. The suitable drip irrigation system was selected on the Green Technology Selector website.

“I am engaged in agriculture in a drought-prone region of Kazakhstan, where water scarcity is a pressing issue. The new irrigation system allows for significant water and fertilizer savings by eliminating losses due to evaporation. Moreover, the watering intensity can now be adjusted, which is particularly important for cultivating moisture-sensitive tomato crops. Thanks to the Program, I was able to solve the irrigation problem and make substantial savings on water bills. I hope to get a high crop yield this year,” said the entrepreneur.

The project was supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance.
