El Helal & Silver Star lowered energy costs by replacing aging machines with a servo energy-saving system
El Helal & Silver Star, a subsidiary of the El Helal Group, is one of Egypt’s top plastics manufacturers. From its beginnings as a small Cairo workshop in 1961, the group has grown into a major industrial player with 16 companies under its umbrella. The 10th of Ramadan City-based facility specializes in products like basins, baskets, buckets, and juicers.
To improve efficiency and reduce production costs, El Helal replaced seven outdated hydraulic plastic injection machines with eight modern energy-saving machines equipped with servo systems. These new machines consume significantly less energy while offering higher productivity.
With an investment of $280,490, the project delivered:
33% reduction in primary energy consumption (2,293 MWh saved annually)
340 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided each year
Increased production capacity and revenue
Payback period of less than 3 years
This upgrade allowed El Helal & Silver Star to boost operational efficiency, expand profit margins, and reinforce its market position in Egypt’s competitive plastics sector.
In addition to financing, GEFF Egypt provided free technical support, helping assess the investment’s economic and environmental benefits and guiding the company toward a more sustainable future.
GEFF Egypt was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the European Union Neighbourhood Investment Platform.
