Full steam ahead for a Moldovan food processing company

Orhei‐Vit is the largest Moldovan food processing company, specialising in juices, jams, canned vegetables and manufacturing semi‐finished products. With 500 employees, the company supplies 120 products to 25 countries.

The company applied for MoSEFF financing to replace existing steam boilers and reduce its energy consumption. The goal of the project was to reduce natural gas consumption and the costs incurred by steam generation required in the production process.

The MoSEFF team supported the company with analysis of the proposed technologies, in particular, the potential for energy savings, the financial-technical parameters and profitability.

The final project included boiler replacement, installation of two new boilers and decommissioning of a 510 meter steam distribution pipeline to decrease the steam distribution losses.

The €520,000 investment generated energy savings of 24 per cent per year, meaning substantial cost savings for the company. The investment will be repaid from energy savings in just three and a half years, turning future cash-flows into company income for the years to follow.

In addition, the company reduced its CO2 emissions by 24 per cent per year, contributing to mitigation of the negative effects of human activity on the climate.

This way the EBRD, through MoSEFF, supports implementation of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects by the private sector. Together, the private, residential and public sectors can make a change in energy consumption patterns and contribute to environmental protection.
