New high-performance diaper production line boosts Hayat Egypt’s competitiveness while cutting energy use and emissions.
Hayat Egypt Hygienic Products is a leading producer of hygiene and tissue products, operating in Egypt since 2012 under well-established brands including Molfix, Bebem, Goodcare, Papia, Familia, and Evony. With four factories across the country, Hayat Egypt employs around 1,500 people and has become the North Africa production hub for its parent company, Hayat Holding. Nearly two-thirds of its output is exported to 42 countries worldwide, making it a key player in the region’s hygiene products market.
To enhance efficiency and expand capacity, Hayat Egypt invested in a new energy-efficient pull-up diapers production line at its 6th of October City plant. The new line reduces energy consumption per unit while significantly increasing production volumes, positioning the company to better meet both domestic and export market demand.
The investment was driven by Hayat Egypt’s dual goals of improving energy efficiency and strengthening competitiveness. The existing production line was energy-intensive, consuming around 7,499 MWh annually to produce 155 million pieces. By adding a modern high-performance line, Hayat Egypt not only reduces its specific energy consumption but also increases output to over 417 million pieces per year.
From a financial perspective, the project demonstrated a very strong business case. The investment of US$4.77 million is expected to deliver additional annual profits exceeding US$7.9 million from increased production, alongside energy cost savings. The investment was both highly profitable and sustainable.
The new line delivers significant improvements:
Through GEFF Egypt, Hayat Egypt accessed financing of US$3.56 million, supported by a 10% incentive grant. The GEFF team provided technical expertise in evaluating the project’s energy performance, benchmarking against best available technology, and quantifying both the financial and environmental benefits. This support gave the company confidence in the project’s viability and in its alignment with international standards.
The Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF), was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is financially supported by the EU, EIB and AFD.
