Increased Competitiveness through Energy Saving for Bariq

Bariq replaces a granulator and a flake sorter with new energy efficient ones to increase its competitiveness.

BariQ for Tech & Advanced Industries is one of RAYA Holding’s Companies and is the first factory established in Africa and the Middle East that recycles post-consumer PET bottle to bottle. The company’s product is food grade PET pellets, which they fully export to Europe and America for factories which manufacture plastic containers used for food packaging.

The company is improving its competitiveness by replacing the existing granulator and flakes sorter with a new granulator and flakes sorter that shall improve energy efficiency, production cost efficiency and increase production capacity.

The GEFF team evaluated the efficiency characteristics of the machinery and confirmed that their performance was in line with the best available technologies internationally. In addition to assessing the economic viability of the installation, the GEFF team also provided an assessment of the potential environmental benefits associated with the investment, a major quality standard that Bariq maintains.

The US$ 752,925 investment allowed the company to reduce 1,100 MWh per year of primary energy, which will help the company save production cost and increase production capacity.

The reduction of greenhouse gases associated with this investment is estimated 192 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, a valuable contribution to mitigating the negative impacts of climate change.

GEFF Egypt was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the European Union Neighbourhood Investment Facility.
