A North Macedonian pharmaceuticals company, Alkaloid AD Skopje, invests € 590,000 in refurbishment of two buildings to save energy and create better working conditions for its employees.

Alkaloid is a company which eight decades, has been operating in the field of manufacturing drugs, cosmetic and chemical products and processing botanical raw materials. During the last 20 years Alkaloid has invested in its upgrading an amount between 70 and 80 million euro.

In accordance with the investment and development plans of the company, the management decided to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in two existing facilities, the Warehouse for the raw material and packaging and a facility called Quality Control Centre. The aim was to create better working conditions while reducing the CO2 emissions.

The GEFF team performed the project analysis, assessed the potential of energy savings, financial-technical parameters and risks.

Alkaloid invested € 590,000 in the refurbishment of the two buildings and received and incentive of € 50,000 from the European Union. As a result, through the refurbishment, the company was able to lower the energy consumption for heating and cooling of two buildings and reduced its annual CO2 emissions by over 340 tones.

This facility was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is supported by the EU and the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).
