Luxten Lighting Company has been the public operator of the Bucharest public lighting system since 1997. The company planned to modernise the public lighting systems in Drobeta Turnu Sverin city, Romania, by replacing the existing lighting poles and bulbs with LED efficient ones.
The company addressed the Municipal Financing Facility for Energy Efficiency (MFFEE) and its partner bank BRD Société Générale (BRD) for financing for this project. The MFFEE team supported the company with analysis of the proposed technology, the potential for energy savings and the financial-technical parameters of the project.
The investment project consisted of implementation of the following: 291 Astra road bulbs 150 W; 103 LED bulbs 154 W; 12 Astra road bulbs 250 W; 11 LED bulbs 181 W; 4 LED bulbs 111 W.
The €1,047,490 investment, of which the MFFEE loan was €884,645, reduced public lighting energy consumption by 102 MWh per year (37 per cent), resulting in substantial costs savings and reducing CO2 emissions. Further, the quality of the light produced and the colour rendering mode are much improved compared to conventional bulbs. This, in addition to aesthetic benefits, is important for the community, for the safety of citizens and motorists, and for the quality of CCT footage, thus decreasing vandalism and ensuring road traffic and pedestrian safety.
This way, the EBRD through MFFEE, supports sustainable financing and implementation of energy efficiency projects in the municipal sector. Together, the residential, private and public sectors can make a change in energy consumption patterns and environmental protection.
