TurSEFF loan supports an innovative ESCO model between Smarte and CarrefourSA, helping to reduce electricity consumption in 550 retail stores across Türkiye while promoting energy efficiency.
Smarte was founded in 2013 in İstanbul focusing on sensor technologies and automatization for energy efficiency. CarrefourSA is a large-scale retail chain operating throughout Türkiye.
CarrefourSA and Smarte signed a 5-year Energy Performance Agreement for CarrefourSA’s 550 stores in various regions of Türkiye. Under this agreement with a shared savings ESCO model, Smarte takes the financial and technical risks of the project and benefits from the revenues of CarrefourSA, and CarrefourSA benefits from the reduced energy consumption in the stores without taking any financial and technical risks.
TurSEFF provided technical assistance to assess the feasibility of the project. This included project analysis, calculation of energy saving potential, analysis of financial-technical parameters and risks.
The project was implemented with €72,640 of TurSEFF financing in 2021. This project is expected to save 20,018 MWh of electricity, leading to a significant reduction in energy costs at CarrefourSA stores and increased revenues for Smarte.
This investment is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 6,402 tonnes per year and thus make a significant contribution to the fight against climate change.
“With this model, we have not only saved energy, but also made our operational processes smarter.” – Smarte representative.
Türkiye Sustainable Energy Financing Facility (TurSEFF) was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and is co-funded by the European Union (EU), the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Treasury and Finance (MoTF), and supported by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources (MoENR).
