Türkiye Mid-size Sustainable Energy Financing Facility

MidSEFF was developed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) with the support from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission.  Through MidSEFF, funds were made available to participating financial institutions (PFIs) in Türkiye for on-lending to private sector borrowers for the financing of:

• Mid-size investments in renewable energy including solar, hydropower, wind, geothermal and waste-to-energy, and
• Resource efficiency projects including water saving and waste minimisation projects.

Overall, with EUR 1.2 billion utilised under the Facility, the funded projects contributed to:

• 5 GW of installed renewable energy power,
• total electricity production/saved 4,560 GWh per year, and
• close to 4 million tonnes of CO2 emission reductions per year.

Eight PFIs joined the Facility since its inception in 2011: Akbank, Denizbank, Finansbank, Garanti, Isbank, Vakifbank, Yapikredi and TSKB.

Advisory services funded by the European Commission ensured that:

• funds were used to finance eligible projects and were implemented in accordance with EU environmental & Social standards,
• skills were transferred to local experts and PFIs so that similar projects may be replicated outside of the Facility, and
• PFIs were supported in mainstreaming within their operations procedures for developing and monitoring RE/ResE projects.

The advisory services were funded by the The European Union – the EU is financing the technical cooperation funds of the programme.
