Kazakhstan Green Economy Financing Facility (Pilot GEFF)

  • Successfully completed in the period of 2020 – 2023 and replaced by GEFF II.
  • US$30 million credit line provided by the EBRD to local financial institutions to support eligible investments in the residential and business sectors.
  • Under the Pilot GEFF, 1,683 loans were provided to local businesses and families, with the aggregate investment cost of projects financed equal to US$51.6 million. This contributed to annual primary energy savings of 1,842,463 GJ and a reduction of over 166,352 tonnes of CO₂ emissions
  • The financing supported the purchase of eligible equipment and materials listed on the Green Technology Selector, which includes 15 technology categories. The most popular technologies under the Pilot GEFF in Kazakhstan were commercial and home appliances, transport, refrigerators and power cogeneration.
  • Expert advisory services were provided to both borrowers and partner financial institutions, including energy assessments, training, and marketing support. These services helped borrowers identify optimal solutions and implement their projects effectively.
  • The advisory package and investment incentives were funded by the donors, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).
