A Tajik farmer invested in a greenhouse to boost production of tomatoes and cucumbers and become more environmentally friendly by reducing his water consumption.
With more than 20 years of farming experience, Mr. Abdurasul Jalilov from the Tursunzoda region has been cultivating vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, carrots and onions together with his family.
Mr. Jalilov decided to construct two greenhouses covering a total area of 600 m2 for producing cucumber and tomatoes due to their high demand. He approached one of EBRD’s partner banks and took a GEFF loan for a modern greenhouse investment.
The US$ 6,198 investment can not only increase farm revenue, significant reductions in water consumption of 1,260 m3 per year are expected. That’s equivalent to saving the amount of water required to have around 12,600 baths. Moreover, Mr. Jalilov and his brothers adopt a hands-on approach to fertilisers, cleaning weeds and combating against harmful diseases and insects in their existing greenhouses.
The European Union investment incentives of 20% is available which makes the financing more accessible to farmers.
“We are known to be successful in combining technical expertise in disease management with our vegetable production. With our greenhouse, we aim to produce high quality, disease-free seedlings in early spring to be sold to other farmers” asserted Mr. Ismoilov.
