GEFF Tajikistan to play a timely role in supporting the recently approved National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change for Tajikistan
Key priority sectors (Energy, water, agriculture) identified in the document correspond to the same focus areas of GEFF Tajikistan
Private sector benefits and sustainable economic development to be achieved
On 2 October 2019, the Tajik government approved its National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change (up till 2030), setting out its long-term ambitions for building Tajikistan’s adaptive capacity.
This strategy document will contribute to the formulation and implementation of the country’s policy in the field of climate change and adaptation. It aims to support Tajikistan’s economic growth and accelerate the modernization of all sectors of the economy. In particular, energy, water resource and agricultural sectors were identified as priority focus areas.
Tajikistan is highly exposed to the impacts of climate change on its glacier-contained water resources and is regarded as the country most vulnerable to climate change among the EBRD countries of operations (CoOs). Promoting Tajikistan’s climate resilience through innovative approaches has been a strategic orientation of the EBRD.
The recently launched Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) Tajikistan will contribute to Tajikistan’s goals outlined in the National Strategy by scaling up private sector investment in climate adaptation and mitigation technologies.
GEFF Tajikistan aims demonstrate climate adaptation and mitigation solutions with significant commercial and replication potential across Tajikistan’s key sectors, including agricultural- and semi-agri sectors. For the latter, with investment incentives from the European Union (EU), Tajik farmers and agribusinesses will adopt technology solutions that can enhance competitiveness of the agricultural value chains while enhancing its adaptive capacity.
This project is funded by the European Union
