GEFF in Georgia and BasisBank held a joint online promotional event entitled “Energy-efficient Green Buildings” on December 16, 2020. The purpose of the event was to introduce the concept of green buildings, describe the measures to be considered in development and construction, promote effective financial schemes and tools towards this end and inform the attendees about the various high-performing technologies available on the Georgian market.
With the world facing the problem of climate change, it has become increasingly important to address carbon emissions in the building industry, which accounts for 39% of the world’s energy-related CO2 emissions. It is therefore vital to implement sound energy-efficiency measures at each stage of the building process, from construction to demolition, as they can help create healthy and comfortable spaces for life, work and play.
Georgia has been active in this regard, adopting two new pieces of legislation, one of which – the Law on Energy Performance of Buildings – encourages developers, construction companies and material suppliers to collectively participate in building a better future.
The GEFF experts, Andro Butkhuzi and Muradi Kharaishvili, introduced the GEFF programme to the more than 55 participants at the event, outlining the target audience, industries and criteria of GEFF financing. They also defined building standards and codes, presented various international certificates and reviewed the green technologies available under GEFF for the building industry, from construction companies to hospitality service providers. BasisBank outlined the advantages of using green financing, adding that the bank will remain true to its mission of providing targeted financing for green projects. To demonstrate the benefits of using green technologies in construction, both the Baltic Investment Group and Agaraki Utserashi introduced their recent investment projects and informed participants about the financial as well as environmental benefits they gained from implementing various green technologies for heating and cooling, ventilation and lighting systems.
The event sparked interest among the participants, resulting in questions and a lively discussion with BasisBank representatives and GEFF experts on the terms of financing, green project preparation, energy audits and the energy-efficiency requirements of the programme.
