Three projects financed by the EBRD’s GEFF in Georgia have been nominated for Energy Globe Awards:
The Energy Globe Awards were introduced by the Austrian energy pioneer Wolfgang Neumann in 1999. Since 2000, the Award’s database has grown and now contains approximately 20,000 emissions-reducing projects from around 180 countries, all of which serve one aim: presenting innovative and sustainable projects to a broader global audience. The importance of these projects is highlighted by the Energy Globe Awards and leads to a multiplier effect, as there are multiple solutions to most environmental problems available on the market today, which bear potential for replication in other countries and regions.
Approximately 800 projects and initiatives are submitted annually to compete for the National Energy Globe Awards. The winners on the national level are then nominated for the International Energy Globe Award or the Energy Globe World Award. The international category winners are announced during a ceremony that is broadcast worldwide and covered by international media. Participation is open to projects focusing on resource conservation, air and water quality, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and projects that create awareness in these areas. The competition is open to individuals, private or public institutions, companies and NGOs and there is no entry fee.
In the meantime, GEFF in Georgia continues financing energy and resource-efficiency and renewable energy projects through its three partner financial institutions in the corporate and SME sectors. In the span of two years, 24 projects totaling €15,000,000 financed by GEFF in Georgia helped collectively avoid up to 26,808 tonnes of CO2 emissions and reduce energy use by 108,000 MWh per year.
