Implementation of a drip irrigation system for rationalizing use of water resources

The Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) program covers both the high-performing equipment, materials for rational use of energy resources, and also technologies to improve the sustainable management of land and water resources.

The drip irrigation project in the Shieli district of Kyzylorda region was one of the first sustainable water management projects financed by the Microfinance organization (MFO) “KMF” under the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) program by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. One of the first loan debtors, who participated in the GEFF program, was a client of the MFO “KMF”. He has been engaged in the field cultivation sector in the Shieli district of Kyzylorda region for about 12 years and has been growing tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants on 5 hectares of leased land.

In October 2020, he has got a loan from the MFO “KMF” under the Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) programme to purchase emitting drip tapes for drip irrigation due to the lack of water resources in this region. Also, the water is rather expensive during the summer season. As the result, he has purchased a drip irrigation system (an irrigation system and a pump) for 1 million 450 thousand tenges (equivalent US $ 2.856).

The drip irrigation system will help to reduce the cost of watering during the summer season significantly.

This project was supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance.
