Renovation of a tomato canning production unit

Conserveries Doha, founded in Morocco in 1990 has grown to become one of the country’s largest canning factories. Its activities are centered around two units: the first dedicated to preserving fish such as sardines, mackerel, and tuna, and the second dedicated to the production of tomato preserves and the preparation of jams. With the aim of optimizing its resources and reducing its carbon footprint, Conserveries Doha has sought support from the GEFF II program to undertake a comprehensive modernization of its tomato canning production unit.

This investment project consists of renovating the receiving, washing, and sorting station for raw materials, as well as installing new machines for grinding. Additionally, as part of this extensive project, the company has invested in upgrading the equipment for evaporating refined tomato juice, renovating the ingredient dosing system for tomato puree, implementing a new system for feeding frozen fruits, and introducing a new cooking system. The investment plan also includes expanding the capacity for the sterilization and aseptic filling section of tomato concentrate, aiming to improve overall production efficiency and quality.

All equipment in this project is fitted with electric motors featuring variable speed drives of energy performance class IE2 at minimum. This ensures a significant improvement in energy performance and production efficiency. This transition enables the company to reduce the production duration from 90 to 60 days, resulting in approximately a 50% increase in tomato concentrate production while reducing water consumption and minimizing raw material waste.

This strategic investment, supported by technical assistance and financing from the Green Economy Financing Facility II program, has enabled Conserveries Marocaines DOHA to achieve significant energy savings, translating into annual savings of 11,504 MWh in electrical energy and 62,000 m3 in water consumption. Additionally, it contributes to a reduction of approximately 3,524.1 tons per year in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) in Morocco is a green economy financing program, implemented by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will provide financing to Moroccan private enterprises through local financial institution partners. Supported by the European Union (EU), the Green Climate Fund (GCF). It will enable local companies to invest in green technologies, reduce their costs through climate adaptation measures, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
